Excerpt from Cyr the Destroyer:  

"A what?” Trajetz asked. For once, I was glad he was an idiot. 

I didn’t know what a ‘Smith’ was either, but I wasn’t gonna tell her that! 

Luckily for me, Trajetz had no such shame.  

“A 'Smith.' Short for ‘Smith World.’ The term's tossed around a bit too freely these days, but real honest-to-zero Smiths are few and far between. 

They’re small pockets of mastery hidden throughout the Galaxy. Worlds that have hyperspecialized in a specific scientific discipline out of evolutionary pressure, necessity, fixation, or any other number of reasons. The ‘whys’ aren’t what’s important for us. “What matters is that Smith Worlds achieve feats that no one else can. 

The elleghasta are considered by many to be Smiths due to our Terraformation of Ballasta. The Anchor civilization is considered by many to be Smiths for their feats in halting their natural aging process-”  

“Anchor? Never heard of 'em,” Trajetz interrupted again, waving his hand dismissively.  

“That’s the point. Smiths aren’t typically prominent forces within the Galaxy. Not on their own, at least. We encountered an Anchor scout when Khayleid rescued us after Ballok’s escape from the Orbital Platform. You were unconscious. 

"They’re largely considered to be a lesser species. Primitive in many ways. But they have a strange eugenic hyperfixation on the physicality and form of their species. Because of that, their study of both endogenous and exogenous genetics is the most advanced in the Galaxy. 

"So advanced, in fact, that it earned them IGC induction.”  

“Yeah, well, okay. That’s all well and good. But you’re gonna need to connect some dots for me,” Trajetz pointed to the transmission logs in the holo.

“What’s any of this got to do with us?”
