Fenegastre: Artwork and History (Including concept art!)

History of the Fenegastres:

Fenegastre: A sentient eusocial species of beetle colonizing the pre-terraformed Ballastian surface along the terminator line, where temperatures on the tidally-locked homeworld were more moderate.

The Fenegastres were rumored to pray on the primordial elleghastans who dared venture too far from the Dwelling caves.

If caught, the Fenegastres would drag the unfortunate elleghastan out from their tunnels and into the hellish pre-Terraformation atmosphere, where they would subsequently pin them to the soil and leave them to die a slow death by desiccation, a fate worse than any other known to the elleghasta.

In Ellegastan Mythology, the Fenegastres of lore were revered as figures of primordial strength, and guardians of the overworld Akaaet, the ellegastan afterlife. The Fenegastres were said to pull the immortal souls from the desiccated husks of the elleghastan bodies, and drag them into to the overworld of Akaaet to suffer for all of eternity.

As the elleghasta evolved both socially and technologically, their plans to tame and colonize the harsh Ballastian surface were eventually realized without any consideration for the Fenegastre protocivilization. Because they were wiped out during the Terraformation, it is hard to say exactly how advanced they were: however, recovery of many artifacts and remnants, including the armor and weapons that they are frequently depicted with, suggest that they were far more advanced than ever believed possible.

In most modern elleghastan history books, this is largely overlooked, and the Fenegastres are rarely mentioned as anything more than a footnote within the context of ancient religions of the Terraformation Era.

Despite this, modern elleghastans still revere the mythological vision of these beings, and use their likeness to symbolize status, affluence, and power, often in the form of statues and glyphs.

Despite their extinction, the Fenegastres are survived by a much smaller genetic remnant of their lineage, the skittering edije beetle, known for it's comical warbling and lopsided method of location.

Many modern scholars (like Eldrid) have begun openly calling for the official reclassification of the Terraformation to recognize the Genocide of the Fenegastres

It is at the Fenegastre Gala that Cyr realizes the full extent of EFFIT's corruption, and decides to take fate into his own hands...

About the art:

"I had the idea of doing a shirt with a Fenegastre design: my vision was an ancient egyptian glyph that stylized the creatures as they might appear in recovered artifacts.

As you can see above in the working concepts, Alastair started with a more traditional figure based on some reference works I sent over, and together we refined the overall concept until we came to the finalized design! It came out great, and we will definitely be adding it to the finished book. You can get the design on shirts HERE!
